Course Prerequisites
No prior formal training is required to begin our foundation courses. All you need is a quiet space, a dedicated mindset, and a stable internet connection.
We highly recommend downloading a digital Tanpura application (a traditional drone instrument) to assist with pitch alignment during your daily practice.
Beginner: Foundation, Riyaz & Alankar
The beginner level focuses heavily on establishing a pure tone and breath control. Here, we introduce the concept of Riyaz (disciplined daily practice). The voice is a muscle, and Riyaz is the workout required to build stamina and resonance.
Students will master the 12 musical notes (Swaras) through Alankars and Paltas. Alankars are specific, structured vocal exercises—often thought of as musical ornaments—while Paltas are complex mathematical permutations of notes. Together, they train your vocal cords to glide effortlessly across octaves, building immense agility that benefits all genres of singing.
Intermediate: The Structure of Ragas & Bandish
Once vocal agility is established, students enter the heart of Indian Classical Music: the Raga. A Raga is not just a scale; it is a melodic framework designed to evoke specific emotions and is often associated with certain times of the day or seasons.
To understand a Raga, students learn a Bandish. A Bandish is a fixed, traditional melodic composition set to a specific rhythmic cycle (Taal). By learning various Bandishes, students learn how to navigate the grammatical rules of different Ragas while maintaining perfect rhythmic timing.
Advanced: Expression, Improvisation & Thumri
The advanced tier moves beyond structure and into the art of spontaneous creation. Students learn complex improvisational techniques (Alaap and Taan) to weave their own melodies on the spot, creating a unique performance every time.
We also introduce Thumri. Thumri is a beautiful, semi-classical vocal genre known for its extreme emotional depth and romantic lyricism. Unlike the strict rules of a pure Raga, Thumri allows the singer to blend different ragas seamlessly to convey profound longing and devotion, requiring absolute mastery over microtones and vocal expression.

What Our Students Say
Learning inside the group batches at TaalSphere completely changed my musical perspective. Hearing my batchmates navigate the same raga compositions helped me internalize note alignment choices significantly faster than practicing on my own.
